The Most Heartwarming Tale: At Home in Mitford
hey there hi there ho there!
Welcome back to my little space. I want you to know I appreciate your presence here. I stopped looking at number a while ago, so I don't know how many people read my blog. This space bring me so much joy, and it means so much to me that you stop by and read the things I have to say. Whether it's about breastfeeding or motherhood or just a post with a bunch of amazon links, your presence is truly truly so special to me.
Grab a cup of coffee, pour a bit of pumpkin spice creamer in, and let's chat about the most heartwarming tale I've ever read.
When I was a little girl, my sister and I would fall asleep every night to a dramatized audio book. We listened to many many different ones, classics like The Secret Garden and Little Women. We also listened to this book called At Home in Mitford. I loved the story so much!
Two summers ago I came across the book "At Home in Mitford" by Jan Karon at a used book sale at the community center. Having listened to the dramatized version as a child, I thought it was time I read the book as an adult.
It sat on my book shelf for two years. Untouched.
I ran out of ideas for books to read and grabbed it off the shelf, not fully committing to reading it.
But y'all, it is one of the most delicious books I've ever laid my eyes on.
It is the first in a long series of tales.
Jan Karon lets us into the small town of Mitford, North Carolina where Father Tim pastors The Lord's Chapel, an Episcopalian church. He is 60. pudgy, diabetic, and single. He has beautiful flower beds and rose bushes, and spend his days visiting parishioners in the hospital, writing sermons, and tolerating the nosey church secretary, Emma. Jan Karon lets us into the heart of this man, his spiritual struggles, his journey of learning to care for an orphaned boy, and unexpectedly finding love with a woman with a kindred spirit. Oh, and of course, we can't forget Barnabas, the dog who responds to Scripture!
There are mysteries, twists, tears, and many many joys.
If you are looking for a tale that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy on the inside, you must read this book! It's intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages but not so thrilling that you can't fall asleep at night. It also avoids dark themes, which at certain times I feel is necessary when reading a book. Some portions of the book are even like reading a short devotional and I've honestly learned a few lessons from it!
This book is so beautiful written and worded, and it makes me long to visit the small town of Mitford and attend a service at The Lord's Chapel! I feel like it's a great book to read as we transition from summer to fall. Though the tale takes us through all the seasons, it just feels so cozy. It's the kind of book you curl up and read during a late summer rainstorm.
You can purchase At Home in Mitford here and I most definitely think that you should!
