Beedy Abode: Twin Boy Nursery on a Budget
In July of 2020 we had the privilege of purchasing our first home. Moving from our tiny single wide trailer to an actual home was such an amazing relief while expecting twins and it was truly a beautiful blessing and provision from the Lord. It was built in 1977, and is somewhat of a fixer upper. We wanted a fixer upper, one that was still livable but one that we could fix up and improve and make our own. I decided it would be fun to share this (slow) process with all of you, because it will be fun to look back on in the future!
We decided to start with the nursery because the babies were well on their way to us. Since, we have yet to touch another room but plan on tackling the living room this summer, the master bathroom in the fall, and making small changes in between when we can. We are a young family, living (now) on a single salary, with twin babies! This means we had to do this nursery on a budget, which we honestly would have done anyway! Doing it on a budget means that most stuff is used, which means I can't link anything! However I hope this provides some inspiration if you are looking to transform a room for a new baby boy (or two!).
What were we dealing with, here? The room for the boys had a double closet, one decent sized window, and the ugliest yellow paint job I had ever seen in my life. I mean, it assaulted your eyes when you walked into the room. Whoever painted it (I'm guessing someone let their child do the painting) painted right over light switches and outlet covers. It was UGLY.
So, inspiration. We knew we were having twins when we started getting this room ready but we didn't yet know genders. What we (I, and my husband went a long with it because he's sweet), did know was that we wanted a woodsy, mountain theme no matter the genders. I had found inspiration for a simple mountain mural on Pinterest that I was dead set on. For colors, we decided on a light green color and a super super light, almost white, greyish blue color (if I had thought ahead I would have saved the exact paint color names, but I didn't, sorry!). The grey/blue would be the "sky" and the green would be the "mountains." The grey/blue color also went everywhere else. Before starting the mural, my husband painted about 2/3 of the way down the wall in the grey/blue color. He also painted the ceiling a ceiling white color (this makes SUCH a huge difference in a room!) and the bedroom door with a basic white, all trim was basic white as welL!
The mural needed to be simple because I am NOT an artist, so I decided it needed to be more abstract and geometric rather than detailed. It was so easy to do! All I did was put masking tape on the walls in the shape I wanted, and it took maybe ten minutes. This room only has two main walls unobstructed by windows or closet, and these are the walls where the cribs would go, so we only put the mural on these walls to save ourselves from having to paint around things.
After I put the tape where I wanted the mountains to go, we painted the rest of the wall green. I decided to stick with the 1 inch masking tape gap between the grey and the green so that it would have somewhat of a 3-D affect. I really liked the way it turned out!
Once the painting was done it was time to find furniture and wall décor! The biggest piece of furniture needed was CRIBS! My amazing husband and my dad decided to build the cribs completely from scratch, and they came out BEAUTIFULLY! This is probably the only thing that wasn't done budget friendly. It definitely was more expensive than buying cribs (lumber is super expensive right now) but it was so worth it because I think it is so special that our boys sleep in beds made with the love of their father and grandfather. Josh found this template online and used it to build the cribs. They made some modifications to fit what we would need, and my dad also cut out adorable little bears to put on the front to go with our mountain theme. Hands down, these cribs are my favorite thing in our home.
I knew for sure we wanted each baby's name above their crib, so we went to Hobby Lobby and found some unfinished letters. We ended up painting them with colors that I originally wanted to be accent colors, but I never really added anything else in those colors (except their Dino laundry basket, haha). Despite my lack of follow through, they still look nice against the walls and add a fun pop! After we decided on the letters for the names, we came across these wooden trees at goodwill. They were unfinished (I believe for Christmas décor) and were like 99 cents for a pack of 4! They were all different sizes and I could not pass up on them for the boys' room so I bought all that they had! Josh stained them with the same stain used on the cribs and sanded down the corners. They had no hanging hardware with them, so we used two command strips on each to ensure there would be no chance they would fall.
We decided to add mobiles above the cribs but I didn't like any of the clunky, plastic ones that had music. Josh found these mobiles on amazon and they added such a cute touch to the room!
For the rest of the wall décor my best friend surprised me with some amazing hand painted pieces that were the PERFECT way to finish off our walls. While you can't buy these exact pieces, she does have an Etsy shop, so if you wanted a piece similar you can contact her!
The rest of the furniture was handed down from family. The white dresser was mine from when I was 3! We added a changing mat with cute woodsy covers, a basket for lotions and creams, and a wipe holder.
This glider was handed down to me from my mom! It's been in her home for years and the green cushions matched our décor wonderfully! The closets don't have doors. I thought about getting a tension rod and hanging curtains here, but with the boys soon to be crawling all over the place I didn't want the added risk. Eventually we will add actual doors, but it's just not a priority right now. So you get to see real life, closets full of clothes and diaper boxes used for storage!
I hope you enjoyed this little nursery tour/transformation! I can't wait to start on our living room (as soon as we find a couple of days to squeeze it in) and share that transformation as well! I've so enjoyed making this house OURS, however slow it's moving!
